    4 day outting with Daughter

    Hey all

Im going out onna 4 day with my daughter this week end.
I have taken her on long day hikes and camping but never onna full on backpacking trip.

She started out asking me about my hike in 2000 on the AT and this trail has had held a big spot in our lives.
As we talked she said she wanted to hike it this summer while she was out on break.
well we got her geared out and I gave her my old kelty ext-frame and hit the scales, full water and 4 days of food and gear (tent. stove, sleepingbag and sutch) got her to 32lbs.
Not to bad seeings how I had it to 48 most of my hike.

I have dropped my tent and will be using the Claytor JH.
so far Ive cut 5 to 6 lbs from 48/49 down to 43 this is good for me.
I never could do the ultra lite thing. (not a bad thing for those who do, Rock on my feather footed friends! )

Just thought Id get this all down to start with and up date with the Battle count when we get back.

(insight note: man I hope she does ok, Id hate to have to lug my pack her pack and her for 4 days)

Father/daughter adventures are never forgotten. How old is she?

Whether she does "ok" or not depends a lot on the expectations that are set down. Depending no how old she is, you may be more in charge of those expectations than she is. Whatever she manages to do.. she did "ok". If you are really concerned about it, have a bail out plan for each day. That way you don't have to lug her and all her stuff the whole way.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Stasi (aka Pawfoot) is 15 years old and has 2 years of Cross country running on her.
She skipped this year (X-running) dew to the switch to 9th grade.

She Has been raised by me and hasn't had to much in the way of feminine influences, other than exgirlfriends and my mom but shes not a tomboy (a bit tender hearted)

I know that sound like more info than ya needed but it may give some one some insight into what an adventure we are really going to be on!

The plan I have is to carry 2 cell phones, mine and hers. (Just try and tell a 15yr olds female "no honey, ya cant take the cell phone")
if we get in a bind we find a road and get a lift home, all good.

This is to be a Fun adventure and she sets the pace. (she may out do me )

with two years of xc and a reasonable weight for the pack she'll do fine. You're dead meat dad. She'll be hauling your butt.

A word of caution. Pay _very_ close attention to her pack weight and try to stay within the 25-30% of body weight. Lower is better. A fifteen year old girl is still getting her bone caps stabilized if I understand correctly. Last thing you want to do is over tax those soft caps. That will create real problems down the line. Within the reasonable guidelines you should be fine.

Your right, Im keeping an eye on it and water seems to be the Big load so far.
with out that and food, pack is comeing in a 27 to 28, if she eats and drinks as fast as at home we should be fine.

Thanks for all the input guys, It really helps

    Back early
Hiking was fun. Started off a little difficult but Stasi out hiked me the first day.
On the second my legs warmed up and I was good to go.

    Hammock :
    was great!
Being off the ground gives you a host of camp sites, rocky uneven ground not a prob.
Set up was a whole lot easier.
Plus your gear is within arms reach and not all over you while you sleep.
Did find out its time for a new sleeping bag.

As for why we came home early,
well it not a good Idea to make a joke about Bears to a a hyper imaginative 15yr old young lady when your 50 miles away from any living soul
