I lived there for many years and hiked all over the local hills. If you don't have it already I suggest the book "Afoot and Afield in San Diego". There are tons of local trails not far from you.
Have you tried the Airplane Monument trail near Stonewall peak? That's a great day hike. I've done Stonewall peak a dozen or so times because we use to rock climb there. There are several really good hikes right off of highway 79 in that area.
There was also a great hike out of Anza Borrego. It went to a palm oasis out in the desert. I can't remember the name of the hike but many, it was wonderful.
Of course, you're also just 2 hours away from Idylwild which has some great trails including a section of the PCT.
