Whoopie Alternative?

The taut line is used in my climbing gear rope for 1/2 inch arbor plex rope. It holds me securely enought that i can limb walk over power lines without it slipping.when you tie your knot use four wraps instead of three,only make the last wrap in the opposite direction of the other three. This give the knot a space between the last two wraps. This acts like a knot with an anchor knot behind it. Im not sure, but ive been told that this resembles a mid shipmans knot ,but i dont know for sure of the exact configuration of the mid shipmans.This method puts a sharper twist to the knot making it hold tighter.I dont feel you will have a problem with it holding. PS. If you chose to try something different , put the suspension cordage through the eye of the tree hugger twice instead of once ,the half hitch that would develop in the eye would definatly hold tighter ,then you would not need the marlin spike. It also could alow you to shorten up on the tree hugger length a little. You would have to pull the weight of the hammock off the line to adjust it though.

Splicing does not reduce the strength of the cordage as bad as a knots does.

I personally think you will be fine as long as you keep the 30* angle that is recommended for the standard gathered end hammock. Most would like a safety magine equal to that of a car, but to each there own. I use 1000lb rated dynaglide and have seen my brother use his hammock (also equipped with dynaglide) as a swing, and not the slightest problem at all. people do use paracord to hang their hammock and it works well for a while.

I would recommend though that at some point when budget permits, to upgrade to amsteel or at least dynaglide, for a little comfort in knowing that your suspension wont be the reason you end up on the ground.

Definitely give it a try and let us know how it works out. You might want to try the Icicle Hitch instead though. It is the "grippiest" of the slide and grip knots and has been deemed the best for today's slippery cordage.

You can make UCRs with more adjustability and only use 10' of amsteel for each side... So you can save weight, bulk, and cost by going to UCRs...

Even better. The point I was trying to make was that for no more than 6 bucks you can save yourself a possible unexpected trip to the ground. While the OP's idea might work, with drawbacks previously mentioned, I don't see how budget can be the issue (which seems to be the reasoning behind using the cord on hand).

The knot may hold... but won't the min hang distance be half the length of the line i.e. 6ft line with a knot = 3ft to 6ft adjustability? Or am I missing something?

The only way I can think of it with a short min hang distance would be if it was done like a UCR... one line attached to hammock then hitched to another line but then it may not hold as well.

When I used a similar suspension method, I used sliding knots on mine. If I needed to hang a short distance, I just untied and retied the knots. While in that case setup isn't quite as fast as whoopies, but who cares really. People run into the opposite problem of not having enough suspension out there as well and they don't have a problem digging for their extra Amsteel; which takes longer than tying a prussik or similar knot. Like I said in my earlier post, I think this will work, and work well for a while. But you might experience the "left out" feeling I had for not having Whoopies...

What is your cord made of? If it stretches, under a load or when damp, then you may be disappointed.
