I have an older GG tarp and am happy with it: it has done yeoman service as a group shelter.

However, last year's debacle was instructive. SG is undeserving of my future business.

it didn't leak once and it was not seam sealed the GG Tarp is a very solid tarp so yes buy one
yup, I was the one under it, as well as everyone else at dinner time. All night it held off water like a ducks back.

They have 8.5x and 11x styles in stock.

MY REASON FOR ASKING IS VERY IMPORTANT:

We are in the process of starting a "Hammock Camping 101" Class at DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon National Preserve, and we are having major funding issues for obvious reasons. I want to get this started immediately and this low price point would help tremendously, but I do not want to sacrifice the safety of the kids over a tarp that is not waterproof....even though we will most likely not camp in the rain.

I REALLY appreciate the help and info if anybody has tried one lately.
I have a two year old GG 12' x 12' tarp. I love it. Works great, I've only used it in the rain once, but it worked great in 12 hrs of steady, sometimes driving rain.

I'm thinking of getting another big one, and a small one.

Once bitten, twice shy. The GG tarps I bought last year (2012) leaked like a sieve and there's just no way I'd try them again.

I've ordered a bunch of stuff from GG over the years and I'm sure I would always trust the quality to something that might save me from hypothermia. You can order one thing and love it, order another one and it's no good. It's the price of the price I guess (pun intended).

I'll be honest, I'd rather run to Harbor Freight and pickup a few of their 10" x 8" (9.6 x 7.4) camouflage tarps for less than $10.00; the tarps weigh 2lbs, but these are kids not ultra light back packers. The HF Tarp was what I started with when I started Hammock Camping and works great. It got me through some serious rain. The first image from an overnight hike with scouts the second is the setup I used with the Civil Air Patrol while were doing support for the Balloon Festival here in Jersey. The second shot was taken right before a sever thunderstorm rolled through, everything was bone dry.

OK, I just got these in and put one up in the rain. The 8.5x8.5 is measured correctly, not on a diagonal, so it is ok for a diagonal pitch. It was in a light but steady rain all day, and then I pummeled it with a cooler full of water with a hydraulic water cannon as fast as I could. The coating seems pretty solid. No leaks as far as I could tell. The ridgeline is not seam sealed though...or at least not well. It was damp but not dripping. I would trust it to a real world test after I seal it up. I am going to set up the 11x11 maybe tomorrow and give it the same treatment.

I have put the 11x11 up beside the 8.5x8.5. I should note that the ridgeline is set for diagonal pitch on both, and the loops don't match up for a square pitch. It might be worth it to add a couple.

The 11x was also not seam sealed at the ridgeline.

Since it has no cat cut it is a little flappy, but not intolerable. We have had constant 10mph wind with gusts of 20ish, and I had no problem napping.

So far they are worth the money and might be a good fit for the hammock camping class.

I'm glad to hear that they got the sizing and waterproof coating right this year, although it seems they still forgot to tape the seams. Thanks for being our guinea pig this year.
