    Homemade UC

So I wonder if it would be workable to buy a cheap down comforter and modify it to make it work as an UC.

    Any thoughts?

No way, down comforters are usually cheaper (read heavier) down with a cotton cover and sewn through construction. The best budget approach is to make your own synthetic DIY Kick *** Quilt from the tutorial here. I would modify the plan and make it 3/4 length.

I trimmed an old down bag (20+ year old 600 power Gerry winter bag) for an underquilt. The bag is quite heavy compared to the beautiful down underquilts many folks here have (no quilt envy here, nope!) so it was no a great solution.
Fortunately, a spare synthetic underquilt hung underneath it pulled it up against the quilt tightly enough to stop the drafts.

I'm glad I made the effort, but my time probably would have been better spent making a second synthetic underquilt.

I did a report on my experience here if you are interested

I'm on the same quest... I recently saw a small child size down bag on Craigslist but was too late to grab it... But I think that would be easy to modify into an UQ...

    Make one the RayWay.

Thats what I did. I can sew, but it was just too easy to pass up. And it works great. Washing machine safe is about as good as it gets. I can't remember where I found the pattern and the instructions for the cuts - but it was not horribly difficult.
