Question about ridge line tension and 30 degrees rule for Hennessy Expedition

Do the rules about ridge line tension and 30 degrees apply to a Hennessy Expedition A-Sym?

Whenever I have the suspension system setup such that I have the 'desired' 30 degree angle, the tension on the structural ridge line is very great - like a tight guitar string. The lay of the hammock is good, but that tension on the ridge line worries me.

So, I'm wondering if the 30 degree rule doesn't apply to Hennessy hammocks (because of the built-in ridge line) or if perhaps the rule about the correct tension on the ridge line is inapplicable for this hammock. Everything I've read and seen on these forums implies that the ridge line tension should not be great and that one should be able to put a bend in the line without much effort.

I never understood comments on the forum that the hammock ridgeline should be slightly slack. If it's slack, it's not doing anything, right?

The ridgeline on my HH Asym Zip (and every other hammock I own) is never slack. I like it guitar-string tight, but not so it's bearing much weight. You'd have to really hang your hammock at a shallow angle to snap the ridgeline, but why would you do that when you have dejoha's hammock hang calculator?

Just avoid stupid angles and excessive anchor distances and you shouldn't have to worry much about the HH ridgeline.

    The HH Can Take It

I've had mine since 2003. I've had it tied almost straight some times when I 1st got it. My ridge-line is always tight. There's really no worries at all. As long as you stay within the weight limit of the style of your Hennessy.

I find my Hennessy most comfortable when it's strung quite tight. I haven't tried hanging it using the calculator yet. I found that after the hanging season.

Even a few degrees can mean the difference between a super tight ridgeline and one that can be slightly flexed and an exact 30 degree angle will be hard to determine by eyeball alone. As others said, it need not worry you too much but if it does just lengthen your suspension a wee bit. Doing so will take a little tension off the ridgeline but not affect the lay too much for you to notice.

I guess my anxiety was misplaced. It's reassuring to know that the Hennessy hammocks, with their stock ridge lines, are an exception to the rule against tight ridge lines.

My thanks to you all for your responses.

Hennessy's are necessarily the exception. Any hammock with a strong enougjh structiural ridgeline can be set up super tight. For example, if you have trees that are very far apart and you cannot get the attachment points on the trees high enough, then the SRL will be tight due to the suspension being less than 30 degrees. Alternately some like setting their hammocks up that way.

I like my ridgeline tight on both the Hennessy and my Warbonnetts. Not guitar string tight but nice and taut!

+1, but the hang calculator calculations don't seem to work for my HH Explorer Deluxe. When I follow the hang calculator height and length dimensions, I get too much sag in my RL for my taste. I now ensure that my RL is relatively taut (before I get in the hammock) rather than be consumed about the 30* angle. HYOH
