one, select, $3, pressure treated, 8 foot, 2X2 from Lowe’s would more than do the job.

I've got that as my fall-back... although finding one that stays straight is a challenge.

No offense, but where are you people finding 8' 2" x 2"s? I've never seen one in any lumber yard. The only way that you're going to get that length (IMHO) is to rip 'em out of a 2" x 4". You'll get straighter lumber that way, too.

But they won't stay straight. Also:

they are the wrong shape for hand carry;
they are the wrong shape for strength;
they have knots;
they are heavy;
they smell bad.

The straightness is an issue at 8' length, but not so much 6' and under if you pick your wood carefully.

Ditto for knots.

The shape can be taken care of quickly with a plane or knife or sander or...

For hanging a hammock, they're plenty strong if you're talking about a crossed pair. (but I think that you must have some other use in mind, else you wouldn't need 8')

Not only does PT smell worse to me, it's loaded with poison that will come off on your hands, gear, etc.

Wood is obviously not the best solution for you're application, but it's probably the cheapest.

Okay, well I may be beating a dead horse here, but you can accomplish this with a pair of ski poles on each end, or with a crutch on each end. I have used both of these systems effectively. 4 poles weigh about 2.5 pounds(and you can use 2 of them for trekking), 2 collapsible crutches weigh about 4 pounds and can be carried onto a commercial airline. Unless there is another use for your supports, you don't need anything longer/bigger/more expensive.

the sizes fit together (very tightly) so you can make inserts so they are collapseable. i made a portable hammock stand with poles i bought, they're 6' tall and collapse into 3 pieces each. i went with the 2 1/8" diameter i think. i could have gone alot smaller though. heres a pic of the stand (or at least one of the poles) http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/a...2&d=1200780909
