I've always feared the those exact results on my vehicles. But I would not hesitate to run a cord from upside down "V" 2x4s ( or even a single 2x4) DOWN to my class 3 trailer hitch.

Wonder what the result would be if you had your suspension line go over the top of the car, down and into a far side open window, through the car, and out the window on the near side? You'd be using the top of your car as a support, and you'd have to put a cloth or something to keep the line from rubbing the top of the car and first window I suppose... think a car top is structurally sound enough for this sideways pulling? Not recommending this, btw, just curious about the forces involved.

I wish I could get dejoha to illustrate this for me.

I vaguely remember someone posting a picture of a rally car that had a hammock hung on the side of it. Anyone else remember this? I'm going to see if I can find it and post a link to it.

    Aluminum kayak paddles

I am going to try a set of aluminum oars for the posts. I have two aluminum kayak oars, each breaks into two pieces and each oar has a paddle on each end. The oars came as part of an inflatable kayak and I think they are cheap. I took the paddle off of one end and the 40 inch long piece weighed 10oz. I would remove all the paddle ends. The pieces slide together overlaping almost 3". The total pipe length, without paddle ends, is about 72". Weight for one post would be 20oz., and for the two posts, 40oz. but based on what others have said here, I think I can cut the posts shorter reducing weight. Also, they would be easier to carry shorter. If it works I will post pictures.

Surprised this hasn't made it into the fray yet, good fodder for thought and improvement:
