Another version of the Aluminum Surplus Military Pole Stand

Out of respect for Turtle Lady and Turtle dog, I didn't want to clog up her bamboo thread any more with a similar stand but uses hardware instead of lashing, and it's aluminum poles that are taken down and fits into my Camry Trunk.

I took the hardware from Artjrk, and used it for the surplus Military Aluminum poles others were using.
The Clips from Mustard Man at Grainger
The drilling from Breyman and Gmcttr
And the inspiration from everyone else's contribution on the Aluminum poles, as well as the Turtle Dog stand.

    Here is the stand,

    The Layout from Artjrk:

    The result:

The process I used to get there:

I drilled 5/16" holes 43 inches up from the bottom of the pole (The tops are inconsistent by up to 1/8" and measuring from them will result in differences) and drilled through the thickest part of the pole, where the aluminum tube is combined with the inserted aluminum.

    2 - 4 1/2 inch 5/16 bolts
    2 - 4" 5/16 eye bolts
6 - Standard Washers ( For the bolt that goes through the poles, 3 for each tripod ) Picture shows 4 but I used 6
4- Larger Pan washers (2 for each eyebolt )
4 - 5/15 Nylon Lock nuts ( locking the 4 1/2" bolt and the eye bolt for each stand )
2 - 5/16 standard nuts ( For each eye Bolt)
2 - 3/8 inch pieces cut from 1/2" PVC pipe

10 - Grainger Snap clips to keep the poles together:
    http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg...rue&sst=subset

I cut the 3/8" piece of 1/2" pvc with wire cutters

    Pressed it into the eyebolt:

Then used a torch to heat the nut and pressed it into the pvc pipe: (You can use a heat gun too)

Here is a pic of the eye bolt and the pan washers:

I did also insert 3- 3/8 nuts and 2- 5/16 lock washers that float over the 5/16 bolt inside each pole, but just in case it started to collapse for some reason internally, I would have something to stop it. Don't know if it's necessary but I am a big boy and the more sturdy the better, but likely just a wasted effort. The stand seemed very sturdy.

I plan to make better hardware limiters that is basically some Amsteel with a triangle of nylon surrounding it for a shelf on each side.

Really clear instructions. Thanks for taking the time to post! Be careful with limiters made with cordage. Your stand is more "upright" (like mine). Others seem to make theirs more splayed where cordage works well to limit the spread. My more upright stands tended to "walk" inward and collapse, so I had to make rigid limiters. But that did solve the problem.

very nice writeup - and final assembly looks rock solid. Are you able to just loosen the nuts to get the poles to fold up flat? And how do you attach the cross bar?

    Well done!

Me likey! Nice work. Can you give us some weights and a photo with totally broken down to get an idea for how big the bundle is when it's in the trunk of the Camry?

I was given the bag that goes with the poles like in this photo:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-ea-4-ft-R...item1c21ca0402

Each pole is 2.25lbs and I am using 16 poles so it would be 36lbs for the poles, add 1 lb for my hardware and another 1.5- 2 for the bag. So about 40 lbs.

Good info, what did you use for rigid limiters? I am trying to setup again in the basement, and the poles just fit with a 4' spread.

With everything tightened up, it moves nice and smooth. I don't think I could tighten it enough to stop it from moving without crushing the poles.

I'm old-school, I guess. All my stands are made of maple saplings. I made my rigid limiters by screwing on smaller sticks (Portability is not a factor for me) Good luck!

Here's Bear on the kitty hammock I made by tying fabric on my limiters:

That is exactly what I want. Thanks for the photo, your cat looks like he's enjoying it.

Maybe just staking them down would work as limiters and use rope and nylon for the shelf... Decisions, Decisions.
