If you had $300 to get started...

Major edit for clarification: $300 is money for hammack and tarp; i just assumed to use closed cell foam til monies came up for quilts, etc. Sorry for lack of clarification.

    Original message:
...and wanted to 3 season backpack in SE Tenn, what would you purchase or hammock and accessories?

Ive ben reading forums for days nd im close. But id like experienced folk to chime in.

Im 5'9" and weigh about 195; but i hope to lose several of those soon.

And yeah, I look forward to meeting some of you locally for advice; but it seems if you want a 1.1 dbl Blackbird, you gotta move soon given the time of year.

    Thanks,
    John

    I would go...
Butt in a sling weight weenie micro
Butt in a sling buginator bug net
    Wilderness logics tadpole
And that would leave you $100ish that you could go to www.underquilts.com and buy a topquilt shell and some down and stuff it...
And a $7 CCF pad from Walmart and you should be good to 40*...
Then save a little more and buy some down underquilt...
Live, Laugh, Love, if that doesn't work. Load, Aim and Fire, repeat as necessary...

Assuming you have nothing to start with:

Of course if you feel comfortable with the DIY route, then the hanging world is your oyster.

Most of your money should be spent on your tarp. Like brute I recommend the bias wwm. I also recommend a jarbidge uq from Paul at AHE. That will leave you well over $100 for your tarp. If you have a sleeping bag already then your good for a tq for now.

When I was a noob, I was overwhelmed and just went with HH Exped Asym Zip so I could get out on the trail. Looking back, I have no regrets, but that setup hasn't seen the light of day in over a year, not even as a loaner. If I'd have known a bit more, I would have upgraded the stock HH tarp to the Hex tarp.

Great setup recommended by Catavarie. These vendors are selling barely at cost, and that's not gonna continue forever.

I would agree with Fish about the tarp.

This seems like a good deal for a traditional tarp with multiple uses: http://www.shop.backpackingadventure...t-Siltarps.htm.
