    Day Hike: Clapham to Ingleborough

Had a nice day out today with Carol, nothing too strenuous but it was certainly challenging up on the tops. We parked at Clapham and took the nature trail through the estate and up onto the moors, the weather was mixed with sunshine and snow flurries on and off all day.

    Clapham Folly

Interesting masonary, apparently it had no religious use it was just built to look good next to the lake

The nature trails leads you through a real mix of vegetation from all over the world, sadly most of it still in winter mode, the himalayan rhododendrons looked impressive though. The trail emerges near Ingleborough Cave and then winds up through Trow Gill.

After climbing out of the gully you emerge on the open moorland, first sight of Ingleborough ahead, looks a bit snowy

As we were passing I took Carol over to see Gaping Gill

Halfway up Little Ingleborough, looking back

    Carol swears she enjoyed it

Up the eastern flank of Ingleborough, looking back

When we reached the plateau we headed for the cross shelter, it was blowing a hoolie with frozen rain and snow, we didn't stop long

Ribblehead Viaduct just right of centre, Grays venue for the last cold weather bivvy meet

We dropped down off the plateau and headed for Sulber, the descent was pretty dodgy on the frozen snow and ice, I did a good section of it on my backside, looking back up to Little Ingelborough

    Pen-y-ghent

    Ingleborough

    Limestone pavement

Long Lane, they weren't kidding either

    A lovely day out

Wow! Amazing scenery, Shewie! Thanks for sharing with us. My family and I are trying our best to get an assignment to the UK so we can spend some time there before the Air Force makes me retire in seven years!

Good luck with your plans, let me know if you make it over and fancy hooking up sometime.

Lol, no not really pal, I did spot a couple of weathered oaks which would've made for an interesting hang. I'll save that for another trip though

Shewie - thanks for sharing - great to see some different countries.

The "Gaping Gill" looked impressive. I would have needed to be roped in to look over that edge.

Glad you got a bit of sun there Rich. Freezing rain is no fun.

Thanks Paul, one of the local caving clubs sets up a winch and will take you down the 330ft to the bottom, I've never timed my visit when they're there though.

Thanks Les, not a sniff of a hammock but I think it's nice to see what people have in their part of the world. This area is heavily farmed, mostly sheep grazing up to a certain height, beyond that it's a bit of a no mans land.

Thanks Bill, yeah we were glad to get down off the top and out of the cloud base. Just dropping a couple of hundred metres and finding some shelter behind a wall in the sun was magic, I could've quite happily snoozed for a while.
