    Built-in SPE

Has anyone tried to build SPE in to a hammock? Obviously you can have a double bottom for your pad. But how about a double bottom sleeve wide enough for your pad and then another sleeve on each side of that going up the side of the hammock so you can put the pad parts in to them?

No, but I have thought about it. I think it's very doable, & everything would stay in place.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Yeah, I've thought about this numerous times. Once you figured out your sweet spot in the hammock, seems like you could sew/build in sleeves for your pads so that they wouldn't shift around. It's a great idea.

    Sewn-in SPE

I did this on one of my bridge hammocks. Within the "SPE" I placed a closed cel JRB "down to earth" pad with exenders that attach with omnitape. I put the main pad in the central sleeve and the extenders in the side panels. But bacause the extenders are already omnitaped (to fit together without sepparate sleeves), the sepparate sleeves were more of an inconvenience than an asset (added setup and take down time and fuss).

I found that for me having a single pad sleeve is more versatile. This is because I can use the closed cel pad with extenders, or in conbination with a 1" or 1 1/2" OCF pad, or even use a wider 26" pad.

If you do make sepparate pockets like an SPE, measurements and sewing must be very accurate with an added allowance in the width to the outer layer to compensate for pad thickness. Otherwise the pieces of pad can leave a little gap near the seam, if the fabric is stretched tight. At least that is what happened when I tried it. YMMV

You can sew elastic straps to the edges of your hammock...just put the wings in and let them hang down. This will probably work better on narrower hammocks...pics on my site of a Clark with those.

Other than that, I think a normal SPE is probably the most weight-efficient way to do it b/c you can go with a single-layer hammock. Fussing with a SPE is a lot better than fussing with a pad (or pads) and everything that goes with it.
