    Top cover vs winter sock.

Ok so I know it's spring. But I am already thinking about next winter because that's when I get most of my free time. In northern Michigan it's not uncommon to have single or negative degree temps. Next winter I will have my dream hammock raven I'm looking at a hammock gear econ incubator 0 and an econ burrow 20. Should i.get a Top cover or a winter sock to go along with it? Which is the better option?

I have an overcover on my Chameleon and a 20* incubator. I oftentimes wish I had an entire sock to keep the wind off my underquilt. It may weigh a little extra but the concept seems really warm to me, and tougher to use in summer.

I did a video on a quick and easy.. and inexpensive... over cover (top cover). You might want to try this first to determine if an overcover will do the trick. If not you can always just reconvert the cover to a hammock again.

Given your choice I'd go winter cover. Covering your UQ keeps any wind that may sneak under your tarp from robbing you of some heat. Just keep in mind that condensation management is key when you are covering your top so ensure you can get adequate ventilation.

Northern Michigan? Molly Mac Gear canvas sock is what I would recommend. The colder the better, below zero is where canvas shines. Around 20° or warmer a nylon sock or top cover works better.

For your winter conditions, I'd say, "Sock it to me..."

I just did a review on the Warbonnet XLC with the add on top cover zipper to the underquilt protector to form their winter sock.
Go about 15 minutes into video.
Personally I don't use a sock or top cover as it defeats what I like about hammocking...seeing out and being open.

    I'm with Shug,

I may put a UQ protector on, but I no longer use a top cover, even though I have one. The best part of winter hanging is being able to enjoy the open feeling of lying in a hammock without a bug net or top cover. What little added warmth you get from a cover is not worth giving up for that wonderful free feeling. Any decent tarp will keep the wind off. I think the alledged insulation benefits of a top cover are just a ploy to sell more products we don't need. Save your money boys and girls.
