I use the five-pound mallet that I sneak into Genuine Draft's son's pack.
He's 22 years old and carrying heavy stuff into the woods is about the only thing he is useful for at this point in his life.
I jest, he's a good kid. Doesn't change the fact that he is gullible and good at carrying heavy stuff.
Trust nobody!
On tough ground I just grab some decent 2" diameter dead-fall and use it as a hammer. Works just fine. Sometimes I use dead-fall as the stake if its real windy. Ill pound a 1" x 2' stick into the ground a good 14" and attach my guy lines to that. Lot harder to pull out than a 8" tent stake.
Most of us here use thin stakes that make it easier to drive in with a foot. If you are using something like those plastic ones, find yourself some new stakes.
I am really let down in that no one has produced a You-Tube video of a group of drunken college guys driving tent stakes with their foreheads. It is truely a sad day.

The heel of my shoe, or if I need a little more umph, I'll use a rock. If I'm feeling bushcrafty I'll carve some wooden stakes and use my hatchet to drive 'em in.
...To wander on in a huge forest without thought of return...
Typically i use a knife to cut them to the correct size. Then, I just use a fork.
I don't know how all you guys using hatchet handles, rocks, mallets, and such haven't broken out any teeth.

Just like everyone boot heal, big stick or rock but be careful if you have to pound it in you my be nailing into a root. I have left a few stakes behind because there was no way they where coming out of the ground. I now try several spots in the area I want the stake until it goes in with out pounding.
