    Hammock color and Bears?

I am new to hammock camping, and just bought an ENO hammock. It's a very brightly colored one, and I was wondering if bears are more attracted to brighter colors or if that's a myth? I'm not paranoid about it or anything. Just curious.

I scuba dive a lot, and have heard about sharks being attracted to the color yellow...some call it "yum yum yellow" lol...but I always thought that was BS and have dove with black & yellow wetsuits all the time and never worried.

don't know about that... but mosquitos are attracted to dark colors... so silver was my choice... remember that your hammock will be mostly covered by your tarp... so it should be null against the bears... assuming you haven't lured them in with food...

if you're following proper bear procedures (making noises, stowing anything that smells in a canister away from camp), the bears desire to skedaddle will likely overwhelm any interest caused by your brightly covered hammock.

You do understand that ENO stands for Eat Noob Outdoorsman and most foods found in nature are brightly colored - that's what I've heard.

lol. Oh, and here I was thinking ENO stood for Eat NO Outdoorsman. My bad.

I know it was a silly question. I just wanted to break the ice since it was my first post. I Honestly am not worried bout bears at all. In fact i hope i see some! I'm actually quite excited to go Hammock camping. Been a surfer and scuba diver my whole life, and figured it was about time to head inland and see what adventures are to be had there. ;-)

Anyway...thanks for all the quick replies. I LOVE this forum! And look forward to asking some real questions once I take my bear burrito...er I mean ENO out in the wild.

Just a little something to think about. Sometimes you want bright un-natural colors, it might be because you like happy colors, it might be so your gear stands out so you can find it, you may be less likely to have someone steal something that has bright colors. Also, if your colors are bright, you might be less likely to have some loaded hunter use your gear for target practice.

I use mainly muted colors, because I do not want to be seen. However, on my upcoming kayak trip, I will use a lot of bright Orange, so if something happens, maybe someone will spot me. Yin - Yang.

I think bears are color blind.

Personally, i don't wear bright cheery colors(hey I live in NYC & black is considered bright lol)... but I would say I am a cheery fellow. :-)

I totally agree about being able to find equipment easier against bright colors. My backpack has a bright interior, and its so much easier to find stuff in it then in a backpack with a dark interior. So it makes sense that a bright hammock would do the same.

Also if I hike from my campsite, it'll be easier to find on the way back.

    Hammock color and Bears?

If you think of tents, backpacks, and clothing and all the various colors they come in I wouldn't worry about it. Which is a good thing seeing how I just order several yards of royal purple to make a hammock and tarp for my wife.
