Question New to Hammock Forms-hammocking camping to bring list

    Hello all,

New to this forum , just starting out and wanted to know if there are a few good books worth buying you might recommend for hammock\backpacking camping.

I have tent camped all my life until now, do you also have a list of things I should have before my first backpacking\hammock camping trip. I am so afraid of leaving something out and or behind.

    Thank you
    KR aka Hanning Inn

I'm sure I won't be the first or last chime in with "The Ultimate Hang an Illustrated Guide to Hammock Camping" by Derek Hansen.

    Greetings

As for books on hammock camping, The Ultimate Hang is a great place to start. It is written by a member of this forum, Dejoha.

The only items specific to backpack hammock camping vs backpack ground dwelling camping, are your hammock with suspension, tarp with stakes and associated lines. If you are starting off with a sleeping pad and sleeping bag as insulation, then that is the same as it was before. If not, then you will need your top and bottom hammock specific insulation. Beyond these items, every other piece of gear for a camping trip is the same with either style (cook kit, clothes, etc).

    Cheers

    Brian

    Hey KR,

As has been said already, most of the gear you'll need is the same as you would for ordinary camping. Your tent will be be swapped out for the hammock & tarp and eventually your sleeppad will llikely be replaced by an underquilt.

The only word of guidance I'd give would be to field test your rig at home first if you can. My first couple of hangs, I even brought along a small solo tent, just in case.

    Welcome to the obsession!
