fabric confusion

Newbee warning!

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a fabric question?
My diy hammock turned out to be a bit to heavy for my liking. It's made from nylon or polyester fabric I found in a local shop.
Because of my newbe-ness I decided to make it double layered.
Specs:
122 x 52 inches, 42,32 unse without suspension.

Can anybody tell me what the fabric weight will be (oz/sq yard) ?

Hammock used 6-7 times, does not seem to have streched, I can't strech it by hand neither, is it most likely polyester?

My weight is 245 pounds, would it be "safe" for me to remake it into a single layer?

If that's the case the fabric weighs in at 4.32 ounces per square yard....way heavy!! Most are using fabric that weighs in at either 1.1 oz/sq yd or 1.7 if they're worried about their own weight

You could cut your carry weight by more than half by using 1.7 fabric double layer or even more by using 1.7 single layer.

The bigger question is what the fabric is made of. You can test the fabric content with a burn test if you've some scraps left over to work with.

The weave of a fabric will also have an effect on how well it will work as a hammock.

Hmm, will try the burn test. But I get the feeling I've been carrying unneccesery weight...
Think I will try to make it into a single layer, the weave looks "plain" dont think this would weaken it.. Fabric is hard to come by around here, have some 1,5 ozprsqyd rripstop lying around, but it is pu-coated, I recon this dont make good hammock material..

Correct. If it's waterproof, you'd sweat in it and/or it would collect condensation and get you wet. You want breathable material, though it can be "DWR" (durable water repellant).

A good thing about DIY is the trial-and-error.
