Proper descender rings, bought at a climbing outfitter, will hold a static hammocker fine. They are intended for top belay rappelling and then cast off. If you're not willing to fall from hammock height, don't buy what rings you find at hardware stores.

    Agreed but,
Welded rings bought at hardware stores aren't the topic of discussion. It was SMC Descender rings vs Omega Pacific rings.

As for static weight, well static weight doesn't weigh as much as dynamic weight, which is what I would put more significance on personally. But I agree that descender rings bought at climbing outfitters, provide more than enough working-load strength for an average hammocker.

So in the video the guy stated that ring began distorting around 1k pounds of force. Many of the materials used in hammocks and hammock suspensions are rated at 1k pounds breaking strength (and yes I realize that many materials are rated for more). I'm not seeing a problem with using the SMC rings.

Given his setup I don't think he even knows what force he was really applying.

I have had great luck with the SMC Descending Rings for hammock use. I read somewhere tht they are rated at 14 kN as oppose to hardcore rings which seem to be 24kN rated. Like many others, I first ordered the beefier omega rings and they are spectacular to look at a yet amazingly shockingly heavy. So here I am about to make another trip to REI for four more SMC rap-rings. I might as well by eight because I know i will be getting a third hammock soon. And to think it all started with one of Shug's darn videos...or was it about two dozen? Not sure.

The strength of SMC descending rings for use in hammock suspensions is a complete non-issue. They are rated for 14kN....that's 3147 lbs.

Climbers use them for.......wait for it........descending rings, where the weighted rope is rapidly pulled through them producing great amounts of friction and heat. The failure mode is usually from wear through.....

They are readily available at Whoopieslings......http://shop.whoopieslings.com/SMC-De...ally-81600.htm
