Hiking the creek in could be fun, however I am not very good at bushwhacking when it comes to directions. Once I am off the trail I am lost for the most part hence the reason I back track as soon as I feel like I've lost a visual marker of the trail.

But I am game to give it a try if you feel comfortable with the direction. The bushwhacking through the woods part doesn't bother me I kind of enjoy it as long as I don't feel lost.

What time where you thinking of meeting on Thursday at the trail head. My guess is that we may as well head straight to the end point and meet there to drop off a car first then head back over to trail head on Hwy A.

Disco are we all planning on ending at the new Russel Mountain trail head(High Pointer Trailhead) still?

    Thanks

I just got back last night from hiking this entire section (Hwy A to Hwy 21/Claybaugh Creek TH) over the last four days.
I think we may need to park at Taum Sauk Mt. instead of the Russell Mt. TH.
Parts of the trail are very rugged, I did 10 miles each day and it was tough. I think we'd be really pushing it to do 36 in 3 days.
If we do Hwy A to Taum Sauk, we're still looking at 30 miles in 3 days, and I think that will be more manageable and enjoyable. It also works out better for where I want to camp each night...otherwise we'd have too many miles on the last day.

There is a nice parking lot at Taum Sauk Mt, so we can meet there Friday morning, then cram into a couple cars and head to the Hwy A TH. We'll still be on track to meet guys at the Shut Ins on Saturday for Lunch. I scouted some great spots to camp each night! Should be fun!
With beauty all around you, may you walk.

It looks like if we camp where I want to camp, we'll be doing aprox. 11 miles on day one, 7 miles on day two, and 12 miles on day 3.

Day 1: Hwy A to Walker Branch. There is a nice site with a fire ring there, and there should be water in the branch.

Day 2: Walker Branch to Johnson Shut Ins for Lunch, to the Scour. The Scour is a cool place to hang...neat view of the valley and the reservoir.

Day 3: The Scour to Taum Sauk Mt.. This will be a long day, but we'll see some cool stuff like Mina Sauk Falls and Devil's Tollgate.

A few notes about the terrain... There is every possible kind of surface along this trail. Mud, gravel, grass, dirt, moss, large boulders that you have to climb up, and several creek crossings (including the Black River). You name it, we'll walk on it. Choose your shoes/boots accordingly.
Water was plentiful...hopefully that will be the case when we go.
There are many areas where you are in the sun for a long time. Sunscreen is suggested.

Wow Disco! Sounds like we're really going to be doing some hiking on this one! Thank you for all of the scouting!
