    New hanger in Vail Colorado

    Hello all,
I got turned onto this site and the idea of hammock camping from the ADVRider motorcycle site. Ive been looking into something small and light to put on the bike for camping and the hammock tents look perfect! Plus sleeping on the ground seems less forgiving and more uncomfortable every year.

Lots of great info on the site and I cant wait to get started! I'm tempted to jump in and make my own hammock but I'll probably end up buying one in the next couple of weeks. I'm 6' 180lbs and have my eye's on a HH Explorer deluxe or Ultralite. Torn between the zip and the classic. Hopping an UQ won't be necessary over the summer?

Anybody ever been hassled hammock camping or told you couldn't? Any special considerations hanging in the rocky mountains?

Anyway just wanted to introduce myself and see if you all had any tips or suggestions. Thanks

Whether you hop or hope, the answer is the same at your altitude; some form of insulation is going to be required. Pad or underquilt, but you'll need something below you once the temps dip below 70°ish degrees. Almost assured around Vail at night, even in the dead of summer.

They are specifically banned for use in Colorado State Parks. If you want to test it, go hang in a Jeffco open space for about 45 minutes. Somebody will come visit you and politely inform you of the rules.

Stick with the forests or National Parks and you're golden in this state. Thankfully, our state is full of both options.

    Welcome to another Colorado Hanger!

Thanks for the tips! I'm looking at a double layer hammmock now as I'll probably start with a pad in case I end up on the ground.

Now I'm torn between the HH, the WB or a DIY. The Family and I made a quick and easy gathered end hammock and hung it up in the living room to play with. Having fun with it and my son won't get out of it. He calls it his paradise!

    New hanger in Vail Colorado

Welcome from Florida. I've skied many a mile at Vail over the decades.

A double layer gives you the versatility of using a pad. There are so many good hammocks out there and any one of them is infinitely better than sleeping on the ground. As to Hennessey, the bottom entry style has lost favor in recent times to side entry ones.

BTW, you have an intuitively smart son!

    Welcome from another Colorado hanger!

My vote goes to Warbonnet, but hey... I may be biased given my entire kit is WB. Nothing wrong with keeping your money right here in Colorado, either! Really, WB quality is absolutely top notch.

Look forward to meeting you at a hang some time!

You'll only need an UQ when the overnight temp dips below 70ish. You'll know for sure when you get a cold back...

Here's a little video I made while hammock camping in the Eagles Nest Wilderness area in your back yard a while back. That should help you get in the hammock spirit.

Snows been great this spring, but I groom the mountain every night in a snowcat so I'm over it. All I can think about is warm weather and camping in a new hammock!

Kinda moved on from the Hennessy, Going back and forth between DIY or the BB. Leaning torwards the DIY with the way the family's hogging the test hammock. It's kinda looking like I might need 4 setups!

Thanks! I really like the WB, I just don't know if the checkbook does right now? Bummed I just missed the last hang. I'll have to keep my eyes on those!

Nice! I run a groomer on the weekends for a local mountain, been doing it for 9 years now. Prinoth or Pisten Bully?

    And welcome to HF

Welcome! I spent three days boarding in Vail a couple years ago when my buddy was an instructor there and I'm heartbroken every time I hear Colorado mentioned now. I just can't get over how great that area is. It literally haunts my dreams.
