This is an off-shoot of cjayflo's thread about camp chairs.
I wanted to make one of these:

I used a Grand Trunk Ultralite just to try out the concept. I girth hitched one end with a tree strap, wrapped the tree strap around the tree and secured with Speer wraps. Then I took the other end and put a loose overhand knot about one-third the way up. Girth hitched that knot with the other strap and wrapped it around a stick I found in place. Worked great.
I tried it again, folding the hammock in half. That worked too.
So now, I want to make a dedicated hammock-seat to carry. I was wondering what exactly the dimensions should be. From Kyle Buttler and Artjrk, I've seen 3.5' x 5' and 2' x 3.5' respectively. Using the GT Ultralite, my first one was 4.5' x about 6' and the second one was 4.5' x 4.5'.
The hammock seat looks really small in the picture. Also, what length stick do you think? Looking at the pictures again, the ones I used were too long. It looks like you want to make a right-angled triangle (strap height = stick length) so, does 30 - 36 inches sound about right? Kyle Buttler used a hiking pole. I'm afraid my hiking pole would snap in half so I won't try that!
I should mention that this is a great idea and buying one from the company that makes them is certainly worthwhile. The telescoping tube alone is worth it. It's just that making my own gear is so darn fun. Well, you know what I'm talking about! Further thoughts and pictures of a DIY would be great!
