First night in a hammock - TONIGHT!

Literally my first night in a hammock every is going to be tonight. My DD Frontline hammock came in the mail yesterday. I wanted to hear some thoughts about what I am about to do to make sure I am not going to freeze.

The hammock is up in my backyard; as is the tarp. I have a CCF pad and a space blanket between the two layers. For my top quilt I have a DIY one that I made using these instructions:

    http://www.backpacking.net/makegear/...ilt/index.html

The low is going to be 34 tonight with winds 5-10mph.

I am hoping to use the hammock at BWCA in May and thought tonight would be a good trial run to simulate the weather conditions. So....am I going to freeze?I'm excited and apprehensive and wanted to hear some feedback before I go crawl in my hammock, which will be in about an hour from now.

    Thanks!

First night in a hammock - TONIGHT!

Congrats!! I can remember my first night out! My suggestion for you would be to have some shoulder insulation, especially if you don't have a structural ridge line. Even if its just some extra clothes, keeping your shoulders warm will make for a much warmer and pleasant experience good luck!!

Thanks for the advice! No structural ridgeline. I was planning on wearing a t-shirt and fleece up top and some long underwear and pajama pants and round it out with some wool socks.

You may get some cold shoulders which happens sometimes when using a pad. If that happens you can sew up a segmented pad extender (SPE) for your upcoming trip. Be sure to pitch your tarp appropriately so as to block as much wind as possible. If you have to bail don't get discouraged. It'll be a learning experience regardless. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Thanks Bubba. The SPE is a good idea. I will make sure I have one of those before my trip.

I wish I would have had some more time this evening before it got dark to practice pitching that tarp. It is up (or at least it was a couple hours ago) but it is kind of sad looking.

Backyard testing is always a good idea. You may have to set up in the dark or make middle of the night adjustments down the road (as so many of us have had to do) so grab a flashlight or headlamp and have at her.

Re: First night in a hammock - TONIGHT!

Congrats... The only thing I recommend is ear plugs... It's always annoying getting woken up by cars or other stupid urban things when your crashed out in comfort...

Ooh, good call on the ear plugs. I do live in pretty rural area, but it would be my luck that someone would come ripping down the road at 2:00 am...

Thanks for the advice and tips everyone. I am heading out....

    I will report back tomorrow!
