Need ideas to create a hammock city..

    Dear hammock fans,
Together with about 150 other volunteers, I am organising a 3-day sporting event in Amsterdam. Every year around 1500 people come to this event and have a lot of fun. During the tournament, we try to create a very relaxed, festival-like atmosphere for the players.
This year we would like to create a 'Hammock City" where the players can relax in Hammocks and fat boys.
Since, I have absolutely no experience with hammocks, I could use some advice from you, the experts
Right now we have an area of around 160 sq m. Is there anyone who could give advice on:
    - How many hammocks we could fit in there
    - Construction ideas

Big cheers to anyone who has useful information!
    grz Arnoud

    Out of curiosity: which event?

I'm a new guy around here, so in no way I'm an expert, but I like the idea of a hammock city (especially in the Netherlands )

Perhaps two rows, each with a truss system (like one that's used during concerts for the lighting etc.) would work? You could suspend the hammocks between the two rows. They might topple over, though. You will need some good stands with a large ground-base to put under the trusses.

Consult the European version of Architectural Graphic Standards and calculate from the area of what we in the States call a twin bed.

Do you have trees in the space designated? If not, or if you need more hanging places, see if you can make turtle stands out of bamboo, saplings, or cheap lumber.

Tablecloths can make hammocks cheaply. Just be sure your binding and suspension can hold a man.

Do you have Walmart in the Netherlands for blue poly tarps? :-)

consider the JRB Pipe Stand - it is not lightweight but it is very stable.

Thanx for the reactions so far!! I will have a look at them!
To answer a few of your questions: The event is called Windmill Windup and is the biggest Ultimate Frisbee Tournament in Europe.
Slowie: If you are interested, you are more than welcome to help us with this project !
The area for Hammock City will be inside a big circus tent. Inside that tent we have a L-shaped area reserved for the hammocks (22.5m by 16.5m, and 6.25m wide). There are currently no points to attach the hammocks to.
We do not have Walmarts in The Netherlands, but luckily there are other places where you can get tarps

No need for tarps if you are in a big tent already, Arnoud.

Looks like you'll need to make turtle-type stands. Two hammocks could share one tower so you'd need one tower more than the number of hammocks, where A=tower and ~=hammock: A~A~A~A

There are several versions of them discussed and pictured on this site.

I'd like to have one made of bamboo. It's a strong and light natural material.

    Arnoud,

    1. When is your event? Did it already happen?

    2. Somebody bumped the thread I could not find when you first posted. Dejoha's three-person stand has a new write-up on his website. This system looks like the cheapest way to hang multiple persons in relative safety, requiring one pole per person and a lot of rope.
