    Daughter's little dog

Ok folks I need some input here. My daughter and I will be heading out this summer to camp in the U.P. Michigan wilderness area in Baraga County. She will be using a tent (she gets motion sick so cannot hammock ) I will be in my hammock. The question is has anyone taken a small dog (10lb Pomeranian) camping? I am concerned that a bald eagle or other large bird might get her. Am I being silly? At night the dog will sleep in the tent with my daughter (17 BTW) but I do not want to face the event of losing her dog to something like this.

Area has wolf, bald eagle, hawk, owl, moose etc....

I bring my 11 pound Rat terrier to the BWCA every year. I don't think you have too much to worry about. If the dog stays relatively close to one or both of you it shouldn't be in danger. On a side note if you are boating either by a life jacket or a harness so you can pull it out of the water with one hand, trying to lift a swimming dog on a canoe full if gear is interesting affair.

On the Hoosier Hang, Mules son brought a little dog, but it was a magnet for ticks! The dog was composed of more ticks than dog. So I'd plan on preparing for that and plan accordingly. Dogs can be a hoot for camping.
I like big hammocks - I cannot like.

Most places also require a 6 ft leash. I have been known to cheat with a 25 but I would not let the dog run free. Too many tempting things to lead it astray. That sort of takes care of the larger predators. I would use a flea and tick collar and make sure the dog is up on shots as well as the life jacket if boating.
    YMMV

Well here is my suggestion. First I will state that my primary home is in northern British Columbia, Canada.

I had two Ravens (real honest to goodness Ravens) try to steal of my 6 week old Chow Chow Puppies. They were probably bigger than your daughters Pom. Ya, we were up in the sub-artic region. Yes, the pups looked like rodents, no the %^@&# birds were not afraid of me when I swung at them with my rake. The gun fire got rid of them!

So what I am saying is the Pom could look like food to some prey animals. If you go into bear country dogs aggrivate bears. Almost all camp grounds require a leash on the dog at all times, with a responsible person on the other end of the 6 ft. leash.

I would be sure the dog was current on all vaccines, had a dose of flea and tick stuff plus the Bordotello imunization.

My puggy goes camping, he wears his booties in my hammock, I have a covered run and kennel for him, it all collapses into a bag to be carried. Car camping only. I take my large dog everywhere, she pulls our gear in a cart. I am only careful about bears and snakes. We have not meet any skunks or other smelly animals in the wild...My dog knows not to chase, but she might protect.

Ticks and flea can be a problem, that is why it is best to use repellent. Kennel cough is also somewhat of a hazard where dogs congragate. Always a risk taking dogs into the bush, the little toy breeds look like lunch to some critters. My pug is always protected, because his is small. My daughter had a hawk dive her kitten, split second movement of my daughter saved the kitten. Probably Okay, but not for positive, there is a risk factor.

I'd consider leaving the pup home. Poms make tasty targets for preds. There have been cases of hawks going after leashed animals.

...ZQ here...You have a valid concern. We live in town...hawks sit up in our trees watching for us to let our 11 lb. dog out....ready to dive down and attack. They already went after a duck in our neighbors yard....and another neighbor's small dog disappeared last year. The owls are a nightly worry also. One got a cat and killed it and fed it to her young. Needless to say, we never let Ellie outside without one of us hovering around her. We do take her car camping...but she is never out in the open more than a leash length from us.

I've seen raptors hit small animals, but never when a big animal is near by. Think little dog safe from the terrors of the sky if close to master/mistress. However, warnings on the small critters, ticks, well taken. Use the drops and check frenquently--grooming is a family kind of thing. Dogs love the woods with all the new smells, so its worth it to them.
