If you've got some real estate in your pack, it might be worth looking at a poncho liner underquilt (PLUQ). There's directions for a no-sew version here (scroll down to post #7 for the updated directions) and a sewn up version here. Both will get you down into the mid-40s, no problem. If you add insulation to the liner (I did), it can get you much lower. With a single layer of InsulBright, I was able to take one down to 25* comfortably and 21* without freezing to death (I was cold that night).

Total cost on a no-sew version (no insulation added) will run you anywhere from ~$30 to ~$50, depending on how much your local Army/Navy store charges for a poncho liner. It'll weigh a little less than two lbs, but is very bulky.

    Hope it helps!

Does anybody have any experience with the Jarbridge 3/4 UQ from Kickass Quilts ? $95 bucks for a synthetic seems quite cheap compared to the $175 and up down UQs.
Don't let the price fool you. It is an excellent UQ. I have 3 of them, one summer season and 2 of the 3 season. I used the summer season one on the AT last summer.

Pads work best in a double layer hammock. Most hangers prefer UQs as they are more comfortable.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

Lots of people like the jarbidge. If you were inclined to spend a bit more, tewa makes a 40* down uq for about $140. Only weighs in at 10 or so ounces and should pack down super small. Just a thought.

Depends on how savy you are at DIY. I spent a max of $50 on my full length and 3/4 length UQs combined. Two $14 down jackets, and about $20 on grosgrain, shock cord, and attachment hardware.

OK, been doing some internet window shopping and looking at different suggestions. I need to pull the trigger pretty soon.

    Jarbridge 30F / $95 / 20oz / 42x58" / Synth

    te-wa 40F / $135 / 10oz / 40x52" / down

    Hammock gear Phoenix 40F / $144 / 13oz / 45x52" / down

Suggestions ? Compressibility is quite important to me. I'm looking to be comfortable from warm summer nights and down into the high 30s. I'm not a winter camper. I'm also 6'1" 250 lbs and have both an ENO DoubleNest and a Hennessy Exp Deluxe.

Would the te-wa at 40" wide have enough to wrap around me ?

How small does the Jarbridge compress down to ?

    Thanks for all the help.

Yeah, its good advice but I just can't get comfy with the pad in the hammock. I think an UQ is the way to go for me.

I've been giving serious consideration to the tewa. Price and weight are hard to beat, though any of the ones you listed are going to be good. If you go the tewa, pay the extra $10 and get the extra ounce of down filling. Should help get you into the 30's.

Subscribing so I don't have to ask the same question

So if pads are uncomfortable, then there are only a few options for cheap-ish underquilts for those of us not skilled or equipped for DIY?

Simplest DIY looks to the be dejoha's DIY, No-Sew, 2-layer, 2/3 Poncho Liner UQ.
