SL or DL that is the Question..

    Howdy hangers,

I've recently had the time to start getting into choosing a new hammock for myself. I have settled on getting a blackbird because so many solid reviews on the product can't be wrong. (or can they...) I'm currently 180 pounds and would hold a few pieces of gear in the hammock with me. I'm curious as to if you guys think I would be fine with a single layer 1.7 or if you think I would be better of with a double layer. Thanks for your help!

The WBBB is so popular for good reason. I'm 250 lbs and use a SL 1.7. It feels a little more stretchy than a DL only because I am at the upper recommended weight limit. You should be fine comfort wise. A DL allows use of a pad if that is a consideration for you. Some people feel a DL also is better against biting bugs. If you count grams the SL is better.

Thanks for the information. I'll take your word for it and go for a single layer 1.7!

The common recommendation is to set up the BB with the foot end higher than the head end. How much depends on you and may require trial and error. Also, laying more towards the shelf helps with finding your sweet spot. Gathered end hammocks are prone to causing calf ridge pressure. Its very common and doing these two things help to eliminate it. There is a trend to longer hammocks and WB has introduced the XLC and other vendors offer 11 foot hammocks. Many people are fine with a 10 foot hammock but 11 foot hammocks cause much less if any calf ridge pressure.

I appreciate your help. I might have to consider an eleven foot version..
