New Hennessy Owner

I just wanted to introduce myself and ask a question. I just ordered a Hennessy Expedition Asym tonight and I will be using it for the first time in a couple of weeks on a jeep ride. It doesn't get that cold in GA so I wanted to find out what time of pad would be the best for me. It will probably be in the low 40s.

Not that cold in Georgia......have you checked the thermometer tonite?

5 degree windchill.

Did I mention the time I hung in N.Georgia in 10 degree temps?

Oh.......welcome to the forum. Many use the famous Wal-Mart blue pad. The Thermarest Ridgerest works well also. Underquilts are popular with or without pads.

When you say it will probably be in the low 40's, I would not bet on that. What you need to do is get some backyard testing in before you leave. Always....repeat....Always prepare for temps at least 10-15 degrees colder than you are expecting.

I have never used my Hennessy without the SuperShelter. I wouldn't remove the SS unless the overnight low temperature is forecast to be above 65 degF. In the low 40s, I would go with the same insulation, top and bottom, that I use in the low 20s, but I wouldn't be dressed as warm.

My first night in an uninsulated hammock (an Army surplus WWII jungle hammock) the temperature approached 50 degF, with a light east wind. I was frozen!

Agree on the backyard test. Besides you to get to sleep in a hammock! I found that I sleep better in my hammock than in my bed and would hang inside if my wife would let me! I am pretty new hanger and I love the system. If you are jeep hanging you have a little more flexibility in what you bring. Do you have any pads right now?

Sage advice! At Mt. Rogers I thought lowest temp was going to be 20. Ended up at 10. I was prepared though. Because I follow exactly what FanaticFinger recommends.

Welcome to the Hanging Gang...

You will do well to heed the cautionary comments above on insulation....pretty much below 75*, after 20-30 minutes, you will need some form of bottom insulation....

Oh, and any time in the mountains it is prudent to be capable of 20* below the forcasted temp... Especially the GA mountains.

Ahmmm... Georgia is a pretty good size state that fits between North Carolina and Florida. Lots of variation in expected temperatures, depending on where you are, what time of year it is, and if any storm fronts are about. Besides, you wouldn't expect a Florida gator to be in the mountains along the AT in north Georgia... more like the Okefenokee Swamps in south Georgia.
