I'd say go for it if you're worried about weight, but most of the time I take my tadpole and only get the Cuben out when I think a storm might come through

No problems here. Go for it Caveman, all the cool kids are doing it.
While I have never owned a Superfly I do have a sil hex tarp that is the same width and while it was nice to have the extra width on the side's and the little extra length on each end. I found that when I pitched it a little lower and centered everything I had plenty of coverage.
I have the HG Hex and it is a fine tarp, and I have weathered some truly nasty storms with it.
One thing to remember is when going to a smaller tarp, staying dry has just as much to do with site selection and tarp position as it does with pitch quality. It takes some getting used too, but once you do the worry starts to subside.

I'm not concerned about the ridgeline, I was wondering about the shorter sides. Apparently it's not an issue.

If the sides are too short, you can always upgrade to the Winter Palace.
An unemphasized part of going light is camping smarter instead of carrying heavier, overbuilt gear that has a heritage of designs for alpine climbers. Go for the lightness and pick good camp sites that suit the shelter that you are carrying.
There is a learning curve on camping smarter.
Hey caveman, Wished I'd brought mine on that Cross Timbers hike. The sides are a tad shorter. Closed down, I don't notice except I do stoop a bit more.
