Second night in a hammock - TONIGHT!!

So I think I am ready to try this again. A quick recap from my attempt last week, I fell asleep easily enough after some wiggling around, but I bailed at about 2:45 when I started experiencing some cold spots. I am blaming that on the fact that I was using my wife's yoga mat.

Since my last attempt I have purchased a Thermarest Ridgerest Large. Everything else will be the same, although my tarp is pitched slightly better than last week (I really need to find a good youtube video on tarp pitching). The low tonight is supposed to be 30, which is a few degrees colder than last week, however the windchill tonight will not be quite as cold as it was on my last attempt.

I think I am ready and will be heading out in next hour or so.

Cool. Testing is awesome. I spend a couple of nights a week in the backyard "testing". Be sure and let us know how it goes.

Must be having a better time than me since you're hanging!

Equip2endure, wildernessoutfitters, raymearsbushcraft, are great YouTube channels for tarp and other outdoor advise. Shugs videos show some tarp use as well.

Thanks for that! I have watched a few of Shugs videos but the other ones are new to me.

Well, this time was more successful than the last one. I made it until about 5:20am and was too cold to get back to sleep. Maybe an underpad just won't work down into the low 30s.

I've used a ccf and also a neoair down to about 30* successfully. Had a 10* Down TQ with those but a similar rated sleeping bag should also work as a TQ. I've read other threads where members used ccf pads down into the 20s.

You may get some suggestions from the HF members if you could describe where, how, and when you were getting cold. Also important: Was wind stealing heat by blowing across the bottom of your hammock or by blowing through the ends of the tarp?

I do need some advice. I been searching the forums for the past hour trying to get some ideas and haven't quite found what I am searching for.

I honestly don't know what to try next. To recap the gear setup. I was using the Thermarest Ridgerest Large for my pad. I placed that between the layers of DL hammock. On top of the pad I have a cheap heat shield. I was wearing insulated long johns top and bottom. I also had a pair of fleece pajama type pants and a hooded sweatshirt and a beanie cap. I was using a DIY synthetic topquilt.

I wasn't miserable by any means, but the pad felt cold, primarily in my legs and hind end region is where is bothered me the most. It was just kind of cold all over though.

The wind was less than 5mph so don't think it was much of a factor. When I got out of my hammock at 5:20 it was around 32 degrees.

Any thoughts on what to try next? Should I double up on CCF pads for those temperatures? Should I wear more clothes? Should I buy a better heat shield? Should I just give up on the UP and break down and buy a UQ?

What if you put the heat shield under the pad? Reflecting the cold away from the pad rather than you heat? I use an UQ so I'm not sure. My boys use thermarest pads into deep cold and haven't had a problem, unless you count the brainless night my oldest went in without socks.... And they've been down in the teens.
