Backpacking is all about trial and error, the main thing is that you got out. Great pics....

Enjoyed your trip report. Good job with the pictures and story. You Are in a great area for hanging.

I'm torn between full out cooking or dehyrdated meals. I go back and forth. Down side being the clean up,
and attracting animals. Upside, nothing like steak or bacon after hiking.

Thanks for the words of encouragement... sure there are lots of "unwritten chuckles" from most of you ("stupid Noob").

I'm not real bright, but very coachable.... just invested in a JRB 3 Season Winter Set TQ/UQ. This sleep system will reduce my pack weight by 5 LBS from the gear I took on this inaugural trip - as well as save a lot of cubic inches of pack volume.

...getting my food/water system better dialed in will be the next significant weight reduction. There is hope - really appreciate the positive input.

Backpacking Noob: solo trip (pic heavy)

That looks like a really nice place to hike! You took great pictures of your trip. As I looked at your first hillside campsite, I couldn't help but picture me dropping my water bottle and seeing it disappear into the abyss

It sounds like you had a great time out there. You can lighten things up over time. Then you will enjoy it even more. There's lots of information here on how to do that safely and not sacrifice comfort.

I'm looking forward to your next trip!
