    Seam Sealer Question

Yes, it's time to discuss the fascinating world of seam sealers. (My gosh aren't we a lot of gear geeks).

In any case, I bought some McNett Seam Grip Seam Sealer to seal up my D.I.Y SilNylon tarp. It came out more like silicone caulking than seam sealer. I think I'm going to peel it off and re-seal with something else. But what?

I was expecting seam sealer to have a water-like viscosity which would seep into the seams and dry thereby sealing them. But this stuff looked like bathroom caulking and went on really thick. Did I just use the wrong stuff or is that what seam sealer is suppose to look like?

I use Permatex flowable silicone, Thicker than water but thin enough to get into stitch holes. it also helps to have tarp pitched tight when sealing.

Seam grip is not the stuff for a sil tarp. You want SilNet. It's the silicone based version. The seam grip is for polyurethane coated fabrics.

Permatex is what I use as well. Silnet is good but harder to apply IMO.

Another plus one on that ... once you use it ... makes everything else more of a chore than it needs to be. Gets in the needle holes mo'betta IMHO!

Easier for me to control and do a neater job with too!

just about all the seam sealers i've run across, require thinning out with toluene so that it'll soak into the seam- rather than just smear onto the outside.

Anyone have a pic of a seam finished with permatex?
