Tarp Setup Tips for a Noob!

Hello, just got my first hammock and tarp and needed some suggestions for making setup slick and easy. Got and OES MacCat Deluxe and was looking into tarp poles for pitching a good front porch for hammock. Also was looking at Dutch Tarp Stingerz for easy setup. Anyone ever used tarp pole like Kelty or MSR adjustable poles and are they too bulky for backpacking? I appreciate any help, Thanks!

Tarp Setup Tips for a Noob!

Why not use hiking poles for your porch and for hiking.

Dutchware is a great thing to have on your tarp. I use the Flyz and they are awesome!

I've always just used some appropriately sized branches to make the awning when using the stock tarp on my Clark. Or I often just tie off to trees if they're available... but depends of course on where you'll be hangin.

As for the snakeskins, while I can't speak with direct experience with that tarp, I do use the snakeskins on my JRB 11'x10' and have no problems fitting that big tarp in there... so the maccat wouldn't be a problem I'd think.

I was thinking about just using hiking poles but wasn't sure how much height I could get out of a them. If your using your hammock as a chair, just chitt chatting with other people accross the campfire will it be high enough to not get in the way?

I have the same tarp. I love it. Yes, the Hennessy skins work fine. I took mine from my Hennessy Expedition and use them on my MacCat. I like the ease of snakeskins for setup. I just switched my rigging to separate ridgelines with the Tarp Flyz set up Dutch sells. A 10' piece of zing it with a loop to larks head around your tarp ring and a flyz to connect. I really like that setup. I just extend my hiking poles to their highest and they work great for porch mode.

Go try it before buying more gear. Chances are that if you can sit and chit chat over the fire you are too close to begin with. If you want porch mode higher than hiking poles will do you might just want to flip that side back over the ridge line. ;-)
