Hiya from the bottom of Englandshire.
The first thing I learned when I hung out for the first time on Corstophine hill by Edinburgh Zoo in August last year was that a good sleeping bag was not enough for about 5C at night. Next time out I had a pad as well but I tended to squirm off it a bit. In October I walked the Great Glen Way with 3 overnights and I had a homemade UQ from an old synthetic summer weight sleeping bag added to the pad and was ok. I treated myself to a JRB 3/4 underquilt for Christmas and have had one overnight near Traquair on the Southern Upland Way in February this year where it was about 2C so went without the pad and had to take my merino long johns and long sleeved top off as I was too warm. I guess you just have to experiment but I would say a pad is a minimum for at least 3 months.
