Lightbulb How well would a cheap sleeping bag work?

I have an old Coleman sleeping bag. It's pretty heavy and not very tight fitting but I think it would work great as an all around bag. Its probably only like a 40-50 degree bag. My plan is to make a small hole in the bottom to thread the hammock suspension through and then I would just slip into the sleeping bag and pull it up on myself. How well would this work as insulation for camping? I live in Maryland and like to camp from about April to October.

Honest it doesn't, because you are below the Mason Dixon line you are lulled into false sense of security....

Hey I am not a mean guy,,, but you need to add some more detail about the conditions where you like to hike and Coleman is the Walmart of bags,,

I used an old, and probably worse then walmart, sleeping bag like you are describing. I didn't cut a whole I just pulled the stitching on the very end of the zipper. I pulled the thread out about 10 inches. I then just wrapped the bag around the hammock and zipped it up. I was able to then pull the bag up almost to just under my arms. I then just made sure the zipper was jammed so it wouldn't unzip in the night. I then just used a small self inflating big agnes thermapad up under my back. I left it just barely inflated. I also use a 30 degree mummy bag as a tq. I was good down into the upper 20's. I plan on rigging the bag into an uq.

I'm warm natured myself so I've always used 'bargain' sleeping bags for the most part ... coupled with a good ground pad, dry sleeping attire, and usually a fleece bag liner in real cold weather..

My thought is try it one night in your backyard during a cold snap and see what you think. If its unbearable invest in a better sleep system, or augment your current one..

sorry about lack of details. I am aware that the coleman is cheap. That's why I don't mind cutting it up. When I camp, it gets down to about 38 on normal nights. Some nights it gets down to about 30. I like sleeping in warmer clothes than most people. I often sleep with a jacket on and pants.

In the summer i use a 20$ sleeping bag. It's for winter camping in col climates that you need something better. The other reason is that f.ex a more expensive down bag is probably going to be lighter, and compact better for packing. Thus Leaving you more space for beer. ;-)
