    UQ or Pad?

    Hey all,

Just a quick question here I was hoping I could get some insight on. I know summer is fast approaching and all but I'm still looking at some sort of bottom insulation to keep away some draft while I hang. I'm not looking to spend a large amount of cash on my set up but I do want something that is going to keep me comfortable when I sleep.

I'm either looking at getting a pad of some sort or an underquilt. I've really never used either so I'm not to sure what one will be more comfortable to sleep with. I'm curious if there are some cheaper UQs on the market that ya'll would recommend me that wont break the bank or if you think I could get away with simply using a pad and a sleeping bag.

Thanks everyone for their help, much appreciated.

Look into Poncho Liner UnderQuilts (PLUQ)...

    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...highlight=pluq

this is what i use during the summer. keeps the cool spots in check and still very breathable...also keeps the skeeters from chewing through the backside of my hammock.

I could never get comfy with a pad.

Underquilt. Check out the Wilderness Logics Summer Series. Not cheap, but great for summer use.

You might also check out the IX insultex underquilts.

Pads can be just as comfortable as UQ's depending on the hammock they are used in. I see you have a HH, go with an UQ.

i prefer an UQ over a pad. However, a pad will generally be less expensive and will serve you A-O.K.

It took me a VERY long time to evolve to the UQ world...but I very happy that i finally did. Much more comfortble. I should have gone with a 3/4 though...full length is too warm, even in sub 30. Woke up sweating each time the 5 times I have used it so far...down to just boxers and t-shirt and it is still cozy warm!!

For me UQ's are more comfortable. A synthetic summer quilt shouldn't be too pricey. A pad is of course way cheaper. You probably already have one or access to one. If you use a pad you can get cold shoulders so many people sew up a cheap SPE (Segmented Pad Extender). Do a search and there should be some info about them. You could even just buy a couple CCF pads cut one up and duct tape the pieces to the sides if you can't sew.

UQs are very nice and have a lot of coverage - but I hung with a self-inflating pad before I made my UQs and I'd take it over a tent any day! Also, if you think you might find yourself in a situation where you need to go to ground, the pad works both in the air and on the ground while an UQ will not. Food for thought!

+1 on the poncho liner, cheap & way more comfortable than a pad in my opinion. Or a diy synthetic, I use a pluq or diy climashield apex 2.5 for the warmer hangs. But like the others have mentioned, if there is any chance of going to the ground, I would definitely reconsider a pad.

For the price, a walmart blue pad cannot be beat. I used my wife's purple yoga style(same as the blue)pad last year and a WM 50*sleeping bag down into the 20's. As far as comfort, well, I'm going to make an TQ/UQ for winter. For Spring or Fall, Summer temps for you, I just use a sleeping bag for the full coverage, no need for a pad.

Sorry, no advise for cheap-in-price UQ, I'm a DIY kind of guy.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
