You're from my hometown Caz! Good to see another from home, here.
As a former UQ'er who has switched to an exped downmat.. I would go UQ if I did it over again. Might be different if I didn't get a mat with cold spots, but fixing cold spots in a UQ is a hell of a lot easier.
Duffy made us both underquilts from JCPenney down jackets that were on clearance (I know you can find a thread about it on here somewhere). He'd been using a pad since he first started using a hammock (2005?), but I am a cold sleeper and he made the first one for me, since the price was right. He tried it out when we went out to the Sherpa Hang and made another one for me (he kept the 1st one) before the end of that week. I was warm enough at +29F when we did an overnight on Rice Creek in February, and cozy as could be during a rain and hail storm on Pine Mountain last week. And so was he...

Lots of good input from everyone, I appreciate it. I've seen in the DIY section something about an Insultex UQ. Anyone have any input on them or their difficulty to make?
And to Slo: EL is the place to be!
Some here have them, have read some decent reviews. I think the LiteHiker BedRoll is insulatex and that generally gets good reviews. As far as my personal limited experience with it, I'd try to make a Poncho Liner Under Quilt (PLUQ) first. Cheap, durable, easy to find, have no-sew diy how-to's on here. I'd give it a look.
The ix uq works well and depending on how you sleep can take you into the 30's. it's pretty light and only costs about $60 depending on shipping.
I made the DIY Kick *** Quilt on here... I used a single layer of 2" climashield and m50 fabric. It weighs 1lb 11 ounces in its sack. I've taken it to 40 degrees. I wouldn't go any lower, but it is really nice for around $150 in materials. I hated the pad, I sweated like hell on my back and froze on top, and never could get comfortable.
