All in all a great response from some folks with a lot of hanging experience here... with the amount of mods and gadgets and doodads in use across the whole spectrum of hammocking, it can certainly be overwhelming to a newcomer!

This hammock is ready right from the box. You do need stakes (4), Get yourself a wallyworld blue pad for insulation use a sleeping bag and enjoy it. Russ and I hung like this for 1 1/2 years before we started modifying it.

    What extras do I need?

Ah, pegs, of course! Thanks jerzybears.

Thinking of trying an opened up an old sleeping bag to use as an underquilt and seeing how that goes rather than buying a pad.

If the sleeping bag-as-an-underquilt will be inside the hammock, don't expect it to keep you very warm. You'll smash the bag and all of its warmth-trapping goodness.

When I was just getting started, I thought I'd go with a sleeping bag attached to the outside of my hammock and it turned out to be more work than I expected to get it attached correctly (never did get it to work right).

Thanks Banjoman, saves me having to repeat your mistakes. My other thought was a PLUQ or similar DIY.
