    What extras do I need?

Im new to hammocks, but I've just ordered a HH Explorer.

What else do I need that doesn't come "in the box"?

You only NEED a bottom insulation system, if you didn't order the Super Shelter with it. Lots of options on this forum that you can read about: pads, quilts, etc.

Most eventually change their stock HH suspensions, but you certainly don't have to. Enjoy the hammock!

EDIT: You may not NEED anything else out of the HH Box, but spending much time on this forum will make you WANT a bunch of supplemental goodies. Have fun.

As was previously mentioned, not much that you "need". Just some sort of insulation - either a pad or an underquilt (if you are new, I'd suggest starting out with a pad) and some sort of top insulation (a sleeping bag will work just fine). That, and a couple of trees and you are all set.

You can make a changes to the system but all you really will find you need will be insulation and bottom insulation a priority as hawghangar mentioned.

You can look at Underquilts, or the supershelter, or pads (even simple ones from Walmart) for underneath you and any sleeping bag for you.

Like its been said, two trees.

That's the best part of the HH system. It's ready to go right out of the box! Down the road you might want to change things like straps, buckles, suspension. But as long as you have two trees and a way to stay warm, you're ready to go!

    Enjoy! It's a great hammock!

    What extras do I need?

Thanks, I didn't order the Super Shelter, just found the HH on eBay. I have a simple list of things to do before I arrives then:

    1. Bottom Insulation (pad or under quilt)

Thanks for the replies, sorry to ask such a simple question.

You will also need top insulation. Generally a sleeping bag zipped open will work, but be careful not to damage the hammock with the zipper.

I have a sleeping bag which I thought I could use. Would the zipper really cause much damage?

Not really, but it is something to keep an eye on, just don't let the zipper catch on the hammock. I've used a sleeping bag for a long time.

Underquilt or pad is really a matter of personal preference. If you are just starting out I'd suggest finding a wide pad for now because they are generally cheaper and you can use it in tents if needed. It may be a bit annoying to get set up in the hammock, but should work well.

You can research both in the bottom insulation section of the forum. What kind of pad/underquilt also depends a lot on what temperatures you will be sleeping in and how much weight you are able to carry.

I personally used a 20 degree hammockgear phoenix underquilt, it has worked well with my hennessy and has kept me warm in a lot of temperatures. The down quilts can get expensive though so you should do some research and figure out what your needs and preferences are. A closed cell pad will work in the meantime. Good luck!

Thanks Yotey, pretty mild here, be lucky to get below -5°C where I'd be hanging.
