    Purchasing a hammock in Germany?

I'd like to give a hammock a try this spring or summer. I'd like to try something cheap to see if I like it before diving all the way in (I'm a side sleeper). Shot in the dark here but I'm living in Germany, does anyone know where I can get a cheaper hammock in Germany or maybe order in Europe? Thanks!

So if I got that I would still need to get a ridgeline and a tarp too? I've always liked Henessy Hammocks because you can get everything all at once (appealing since I know I get all I need and it will all fit together), unfortunately they are so expensive.

Even with Hennessy, you will have to add some items. I didn't get a (tarp) ridge line or guy lines with it. With another Hennessy tarp, I got some guy lines, but they were of the cheapest make (maybe they weren't Hennessy originally, but added by the previous owner).

Better get resigned to the fact that you will eventually have to spend more than on a comparable tent set-up. Simply because there is so much more choice and competition on the tent market while the camping hammock market is fairly new.

There are not too many options over here, if you want a fully integrated hammock. Some have already been listed.

Within Germany, I only found the following options:

    • Hennessy Hammocks - sold online by Hängemattenshop.com, but they also turn up on eBay a lot
    • DD Hammocks - also sold online by Hängemattenshop.com
    • Amazonas Hammocks - sold by several shops, but the feedback I read about these hammocks wasn't too great
    • Globetrotter sells a home brand, but with that price, I doubt that it'll be good

If you are willing to order in one of the other EU-countries, you can add a couple more choices.

    • UK Hammocks - they have their own fully integrated model
    • Warbonnet Hammocks - sold by UK Hammocks, but not always in stock
    • DD Hammocks - sold directly from the UK

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, eBay is pretty much your best option. On eBay UK, used Hennessys turn up more often than on eBay Germany.

The cheapest option would obviously be diy. If your focus lies on trying out hammocking, you could just build a non-integrated hammock (maybe even double-layer to use your pad), and make a mosquito hammock sock to go with it. With regards to the tarp: go with a cheapo plastic tarp. If you don't go camping in really bad weather, it should hold up. And you get an idea if hammocks are for you or not. If you like it, I'd recommend doing a lot of research here, and go for the best you can afford. Even if it means ordering from the US.

Thanks a lot for all that info. I'm thinking eBay will probably be my best bet. I'll just keep my eyes open for a good deal.

Tenth Wonder Hammocks, that might be your best/cheapest shot. They have an ebay page, but IIRC it was a few bucks cheaper from their own homepage.

Great guys to deal with too, great! Oh, and no affilitation with the company other than extreme satisfaction from the stuff i bought from them! Quality gear, maybe a bit on the heavy side tarp-wise, but I really like them anyway.

Check it out, I got the Sargasso tarp, and an XL-hammock. Wish I would've opted for the Hornet-hammock instead with the integrated bugnet though.

Weird that not more people have mentioned them? Too small of a company maybe? I like that thought.

    Good luck! / SwedeMix
