    New Sock Idea!

check out page 2...i have an updated idea!

ok guys i have a new sock idea....tell me what you think...

download if you have google sketchup:

    http://www.angrysparrow.com/hammock_...ammocksock.skp

    snap shot of google sketchup:

    i hope that works^^

anyway i would have to figure out a way to make it stay open...its basically like hanging your hammock through a tube tent...but the ends would be sinched on the end of yourhammock..taht way you can store stuff underneath you...block the wind....possibly make it waterproof and elliminate the need for a tarp...what do you think?

    sounds pretty cool

Making it waterproof would be kind of neat but you would have to address the issues of condensation, especially if you were planning on storing things in it underneath you.

    Drawing looks pretty cool.

Pretty similar idea to my "Tube Sock" (mind you, I didn't have rigid enough circular poles in this pic.) Can't make it totally waterproof and get rid of tarp due to condensation issues - would need to add a vent system similar to a tent - inner layer breathable, open mesh top covered by another waterproof layer (rain fly.)

Didn't you go back to ground months ago? Good to see you saw the light of resonand got back up off the ground.

To keep it open: Have you seen those collapsible tubs/buckets that have a vinyl body and plastic hoops that make the structure of the tub/bucket? I think those plastic hoops collapse down in a specific manner. If I can find a link of one I'll post it. You could use those hoops to keep it open at the center.

    Just an idea.

BTW, thanks for the intro in to Sketchup. I've been looking for a CAD drafting like program that's free.

I made a very similar sock for my DIY bridge. I use 1.1-rip stop DWR. I sewed a 100” zipper one the side to get in and out of the bridge, then sewed in a window in the top for venting. I used a non-structure ridgeline to drape the sock over the top.

I used it at Mt.Rodgers with a tarp. It did a great job at air infiltration and keeping me warm. Highly recommend for a winter set-up … sorry no pics, I was too busy take pics of everyone else’s set-up.

You might try some flexible rods joined to form a full circle, passing through loops sewn outside of the central perimeter - kinda like a dome tent shell. Or picture a tunnel tent pitched atop and facing a mirror, then fill in the missing pieces.

Re replacing a tarp, I keep hearing "Rock a bye, baby..." in my mind. Being all closed in with few visual cues, e.g., in a storm, is there a risk of motion sickness? Think I'd want to be seriously staked down!

    just a thought...

Also you might want to think about where you're going to hang out and/or cook, etc. when it rains. Might be pretty hard to stay in your "sock" for that long if it doesn't stop raining.
