TD stand with folding wooden tripods?

I'm wondering if anyone has made a TurtleDog-style hammock stand where the tripods can break down from 6+ foot length down to half of that, and are made of wood dimensional lumber available from the local home improvement store?

I like the idea of the TD stand, but want to be able to fit it in the trunk of my car, so I'm wondering if there is an easy way to make the 2x2" tripod legs break down for transport. I know about the military surplus aluminum poles, but at $80 or more, plus shipping, I'm looking for something lower cost if possible.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks,

TD stand with folding wooden tripods?

    That is the $64,000 question.
My wood stand uses 1.25" curtain rods. Looking for an appropriate connector. Toying with PVC or possibly aluminum tubes. Just trying to find something with the correct inner diameter. I think the most important aspect is a snug fit.

After the legs, comes the horizontal bar. I think there is more stress there.

My wood stand fits in the trunk easily, but I cut it down to use with a shorter hammock. Even before I shortened it I could get it in the car. The original length of the pieces was determined by the two halves of the 10' fence rail I used for a ridge pole.

There has been some talk about using hinges and hooks and other hardware attachments, but the integrity of the stand is compromised and you sure couldn't have much slop in the execution of the thing, or it would just get weak in a hurry.

BTW, you can get those aluminum masts for a like $50-60 bucks shipped. Theoretically that is, mine haven't arrived yet...

Or like David, you can make it pretty small if you are using a small hammock and especially if you're willing to hang low. Turtlelady's stand she's nearly on the floor.

+1 on this. The Travel bag I made is tailored to the 10' pole sections- actually about 10'5" before the cut( Home Depot stock fence rail section. My 2 pieces are 5'2 or 3", and I cut down my 6' cedar 2x2s to match. Result: The 11' hammock is quite low, the 10'5' tablecloth hammock feels kinda normal (at my own 5' 10" height), and the ENO Doublenest is a tad bit high. All are hanging at 35-38 degrees. Hope this helps.

Couldn't you use Galvanized pipe? Should be plenty strong enough and you can use threaded couplers to attach the pieces together. And it is all available at any big box hardware store.

I've got mine cut down to a 48" lengths, I was building around my WBBB. The wood parts are 1 1/8" hardwood broom handles about $6 each.

Bannerstone, I have admired your beautiful stand and something I had contemplated during the HD browsing for the TD stand. I was looking at the extension fiberglass paint poles and couldn't figure out a way to do the upper conection which you seem to have resolved. For anyone willing to spend the money for 7 fiberglass paint poles, 6 for tripod and 1 for toprail, this could be a TL/TD or BS stand that would fit in a 3' package Probably need to link to your original post for those that haven't seen it.
