I agree - great thread.
I find I pretty much only use three knots in the bush:
Bowline
"Slip knot" (AKA marlinspike hitch)
Truckies hitch - although I was taught to tie this with two loops not one. Not sure why as only one of the loops is used for tensioning and the other just sits there.
My most frequent use of the bowline on a bight is as the loop for a trucker's hitch. It's a reliable fixed loop in the middle of the line, and it unties very easily after the hitch is undone (even when it has been pulled down very tightly to secure a load). Other knots I've used to form this loop have either been unreliable or difficult/impossible to untie when I'm finished with it. Obviously, it depends on the type of cord you're using, which for me is often paracord.
Thanks- really useful info. Shouldn't this be a sticky?
Nice thread, Thanks
Any day in the Bush is better than a day at work!
Great thread! A correctly tied knot sure makes a tough job easier!
The bowline is my favorite, but I dont tie it often enough to remember how to. It does work great on tarps.
Great article, I learned a couple new knots from reading this. Thanks @rat
Thank you Rat!
I made a pdf/jpeg from your article for easy printing and reference

Thank you for talking about knots. I wish I could memorize half as many as you know. I use the bowline knot the most, and prefer the marlin spike to hang my hammock. Knots should be taught at an early age as they are so useful and essential not just for outdoorsy people but for so many applications. Kudos to you sir.
