Hello, I'm a design student looking for DIY magic tips

Hello! I'm a fashion design student here in NYC. I'm primarily interested in designing swimwear, active wear, and specialty outdoor gear. It turns out, not a lot of pro designers know much about making more technical gear and this is the most active DIY related forum I have found. I'll try to keep my posts relevant to Hammock and tarp related DIY techniques; I'm here to talk shop, get some insights, and hopefully share some in return. Thanks!

This site has replaced all of my gear forums, now that I'm a donating member. The 'hidden' section is fantastic.

Donation complete. I'm experiencing Ron Swanson level giddiness over this. Thank you!

Nice to meet another Ron Swanson fan! Welcome!
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

Welcome. I hope we'll learn about interesting fabrics from you. I tried making a hammock out of Versatech once - very slippery (which is okay), but not quite strong enough. I cut the pieces up and turned it into a wind shell. As for DIY magic, here's one: a sewing machine needle makes a very small and light lockstitch awl for on-trail repairs.

What we want is a stretch 1 oz fabric that'll keep you warm, dry and make you look good to those who took a shower this morning (since we didn't). Color is an individual thing. Then we get rid of that heavy down.
