    Solo Overnight in Maryland

Got out on the AT for a night this weekend. I hiked roughly four miles (uphill in just over an hour, was pretty proud ) in from Route 40 to Pogo Memorial Campground and stayed for the night then hiked back to 40 in the morning and met my ride. Saturday night was amazing; warm, sunny, lots of birds (and some bugs) moving... It finally felt like Spring. Temps dropped pretty quick with the sun, but I don't think it got much below 35 F. I was easily comfortable with what I brought.

Sunday morning I was up with the sun enjoying BFTH, then packed up and headed out. I had time to kill while waiting for my ride so I found a nice little rock outcropping near Black Rocks and had a little mid-morning siesta... Until the rain started. I made a quick stop at Annapolis Rocks, then headed down to Pine Knob shelter to get out of the rain while I waited for my ride. After an hour or so of bird-watching (the rain seemed to stir them up) I walked out and got my ride... Just in time to head to Grandma's house for some Easter deliciousness.

Superfly up with no doors, in porch mode. Amazing set up, love the view. Notice the Dyneema going off to the left from the smaller tree? I used two pieces running to a downed log since the small tree was a little more springy than I wanted. It worked well.

You can see the 'support lines' a bit better here.

Another shot of those lines. You can just barely make them out going to the big log.

Got a fire going and started on some dinner. Someone had really put some work into making this fire ring comfortable, thanks!

Don't think this one needs a caption.

    And the obligatory fire picture.

Spring is always a great time to be out and seeing it all start to wake. and you look like you had a real nice time of it!

good thinking on the log reinforcement, not sure I'd have thought of that.

Absolutely! I'm excited for it to warm up a bit, and for all the green to start coming up... But I have to admit I'm a little sad to see many of the great views disappearing. Oh well, all part of a larger cycle.

If you were trying to hang from that tree you would have... It was really springy, and its roots didn't seem to be holding all that well. I hated to risk hurting the tree, but there was really nowhere else to hang at that site. Luckily I keep a handful of extra sets of dyneema lines for setting up my Superfly, that turned out to be very handy (I had thought it might.)

I was a little nervous about how well it would work, but it actually did perfectly. The lines were slack when I wasn't in the hammock and went taught when I climbed in. Luckily they didn't cut into the bark at all, I was worried about that. They cut into the downed log almost half an inch.
