You may use a hammock as a sleeping unit in a SD state park campground. Camping fees and regulations would be the same as those that apply to tent camping. You may not damage or destroy a tree but the hanging straps that you describe sound acceptable. Thank you for your inquiry.

The 50 State Project: US State Parks & Hammocks

Thank you for doing this! Mass seems really open to the idea so far. I'm curious what the official statement will be.

We MO peeps had a thread about this in Feb. Hangers of MO State Parks Heads Up

I ended up calling the MO Parks Dept to verify the size of the tree straps they were wanting used as a few HF members were told it was 3 inches. Apparently there is no the state wide regulation, but they prefer 2 inch nylon straps, but suggested checking with the individual parks as they may have a different idea of what's appropriate. Also note, no one I spoke with at the Parks Dept was keen on the use of hammocks.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the MO Conservation Dept has no regulations or preference regarding suspension and were very happy to discuss the issue. As long as camping is allowed, hammocks are allowed.

This is a great email I just got. If anyone is in this state and hammock's, please use the contact info at the bottom to send in some pictures!

    Hello David,
Thanks for writing to us! Using a hammock instead of a tent is a great idea. We certainly welcome hammocks in our Vermont State Parks. There are no restrictions against their use. The only rule we have which might apply is that damaging trees is prohibited, however securing a hammock as you describe would not hurt the tree.

If you come across any, we would love some photos of hammock use in Vermont parks so we can help promote this fun way to camp (or nap).

    Thanks again!

Now we need a spreadsheet for the results.

For the parks with doubts, how about sending them a hammock setup to test themselves, along with a DVD of Shug's how to series. That would be something different.

    Thanks for doing this REV.
