    Hanging around Southern Utah

I had an extended time in Southern Utah during March. This was around the Escalante area and beyond. I camped and backpacked with my hammock and HG hex tarp, and it worked out great! I used to be less confidant at finding hanging locations in the desert, but I had no trouble on this trip. I never had to "go to ground", but I seldom had two living trees to hang from. I did have to start looking for a campsite a little earlier in the evening to make sure I found something suitable.

As a side note, I tend to hang my foot end of the tarp lower, because I use a narrow foot bridge. This is working well for me. The tarp was needed more for blocking wind than for rain on this trip.

Here are some highlights of my hangs. Enjoy!

I've wondered about having to go to ground camping in Utah, but I've got a little more hope after seeing this. Thanks for sharing!

Ditto pgibson on the huge dead tree hang, that is too cool! Gotta love the Utah desert this time of year. I too have had my doubts about finding enough places to hang there, but you have put some good thought into your locations and I am inspired for sure. Thanks!

    Hanging around Southern Utah

Nice pics! It funny that you should mention going to ground in southern Utah, because just two weeks ago my two buddies and I had to go to ground near Coyote gulch in Escalante. I never plan to go to ground (I think everyone on this forum has had nightmares about that since moving to the trees ) but I was glad I could pull out my pad from my ula ohm and my cozy I use for heating my meals for insulation, pad under my back and cozy under my bottom. It wasn't great, but it worked, and I was glad that I had those or it would've made for a much colder night.

    Campsite along Indian Creek

Thanks Paul, I kind of lucked out on that one. It came after a long dayhike in Canyonlands to visit Chesler Park and the Druid arch. The campground in Canyonlands was beautiful, but just outside the National Park is some excellent free camping along Indian Creek. This area is well known to rock climbers, and is a seriously gorgeous area that I will return to. Anyway as daylight was fading I drove up Indian Creek to find this awesome site just before a cattle gaurd crossing. It was one of the few nights where it actually rained, but I snoozed with no worries, and had enjoyed one of my few campfires on the previous night. As I drove out of there I counted many more potential hammock hanging campsites. Highly recommended area!
