Yeah, I was trying to remember where water was an issue too.

Table Rock state park to Chimneytop Gap. I think only one of the sources listed in the guide book had a trickle. I think once you get past that, there should be plenty of water year-round.

I never got water from the bigger rivers (Chattooga, Toxaway, Thompson etc.). Are they safe?

only a small chunk of the trail follows the chattooga.

however, the trail was one beautiful stream crossing after another for the first 40 miles from oconee. many swims, many meals!

hard to see where someone could say no water, at least for that 40 miles.

    WHEN to do it?

I like 'walking with spring' -- while 'nature's first green is gold' (Frost's great line ... baby tree leaves and buds) with flowering shrubs and trees and the bluets, spring beauties and others.

Before the stifling sauna of southern summer and cool rivulets still provide the fruits of winter.

My guess is last week of April to first week of May???

Is that too late? Is earlier better?

I'd love to do it in late spring, but I'm taking a bunch of high school kids. They won't be done with school until June. Bring on the sauna . . . .

I hiked the western end of the FHT, from the Fishhatchery to Oconee State Park (22 miles) over Memorial Day Weekend. Temps were great then and should still be in mid-June. I did the Fork Mtn. Trail from Sloans Bridge to Burrell's Ford, (12 miles) last October. It was a beautiful hike. Water from the Chatooga was fine. I filter and purify.
    Here is my trip report.
