Kifaru Doobie Xpress as an underquilt

I have been using the Kifaru Doobie Express as an underquilt with a Claytor hammock turned upside down.

I've been using it indoors so I have not really tested it outside in the cold but it is like it was meant to go together.

The Doobie Express is a Climashield over-gear poncho with velcro on the sides. Opened up, it can be used as an overquilt but it's dimensions are fit the Claytor hammock perfectly to be used as an underquilt that you put between the hammock and the bug net with the whole hammock used upside down. All I did was stick on matching strip of velcro to the hammock that can be used with the ones already on the Doobie Express. The bug net then keep the thing tight to the bottom of the hammock without compressing it too much.

On the plus side, you can also use the Doobie Express for it's original intended purpose and thus save on weight/extra gear - as a warm up layer in camp when you stop moving. I figure it should work at least down to freezing and it's "free gear" because you can use it in camp anyway when you are not sleeping.

I have also used plain ol' rectangular 40 deg sleeping bags opened up in this manner and have been out down to 15F with no problems - no shifting of the bag because the bug net holds it in place nicely.

Nice! I was just thinking this weekend to use my Kifaru Woobie as and underquilt. I'm not sure if I'll have to sew in a channel the whole way or if I can just use the n lured loops. I'm thinking about trying it out at the Spring MAHHA coming up next week.

been using the woobie and doobie for under insulation for a while now...

my favorite set up.. the woobie gets me to about 25° F and the doobie has

been to 10° F , but can go lower but not cold enough to know the limit yet.

been waiting to see when someone was going to discover the kifaru's.

thats a cool idea to rig the kifaru with the jungle hammock net, but what

happens when the bugs are active ? mine are independent of the bias net.

Yup, waiting for payday then getting a woobie for a summer TQ. 20oz's ain't bad at all.

i use one woobie on top and one under ... or a doobie under if its cold and a

CS top zip propper bag.

Do you have any experience on the waterproofness of the woobie/doobie fabric?

I personally don't have any experience with the Woobie getting wet. Since its made with the RhinoSkin with DWR finish, hopefully it will shed water/moisture well.

My KU3700 pack does pretty well, but I haven't had that out in any major downpours either.

That with an Exped UL and a WBSF and I don't know there's a more versatile 3-season shelter/insulation combo for the weight.

I'll definitely do a write up on my initials impressions of the woobie and it's field usability. How long do they take to receive after ordering on average?

I think Kifaru has the "normal" 3-4 week wait since they make everything to order.

Off subject, but just this week they mentioned they will no longer be making their KU packs (5200, 3700). On their forum, they mentioned they had enough material cut for just a few more packs. I'm glad I got my KU3700 in the Fall!
