+1 on HangLow's suggestion on snaps. I would highly recommend snaps for the foot box instead of a zipper. Maybe I just have sensitive calves but I put a zipper in my DIY quilt and I can't think of a single night I've used it and haven't regretted it. I am finally pulling the zipper out and going to snaps this week.

Snaps it is! Sounds like this is the easier and possibly better way to go. I'm probably shaving off some weight in the process. I'm hoping this baby comes in under 20oz!

Should i reinforce the grossgrain loops into the quilt lining, or is the single stitch sufficient?

If it were me I wouldn't reinforce it.

This is not a hammock supporting your weight, or even a tarp flapping in a storm.

Think about what a failure would look like. If the grosgrain pulls out and leaves the fabric intact then you can think about it and the repair is simple. On the other hand if it rips out a big chunk of M50 then repair is more complicated.

    UNANSWERED
Looking at the enLIGHTened top quilt I got this weekend, I could not see where the grosgrain loops were attached to a reinforced spot in the fabric. I think a double stitch in that area would be more than enough reinforcement.

I have been working on the quilt (unfortunately it won't be done for this weekends trip to Red River Gorge). The more I work with the M50, the more I'm concerned about it tearing in certain spots The M50 feels and handles more like a strong plastic bag, than fabric when pulled. The areas I am particularly concerned with are the loops, snaps, and drawstring grommets.

I played around with installing some small grommets last night. Using a backing of grossgrain definately helped the strength of the grommets. Even better was sandwiching the M50 between two patches of grossgrain. I didn't sew around the grossgrain which would have helped. My concern on doing it this way would be appearance (call me vain).

What do you think about reinforcing the M50 with something like Tenacious Tape in the areas where the loops, snaps, and grommets run through the M50?

I have been thinking through the snaps as well. I can put them on the grossgrain loop outside of the M50. Alternatively I could put them through the M50 -> grossgrain -> M50. I kind of like the second option as it would help to reinforce the gross grain to the quilt. The concern is the M50 tearing, but possibly the Tenacious Tape would help prevent it.

    Thoughts?

Thanks. I really like the EE design (which is why I was going to do a zippered footbox initially) When you say double stitch, just run another stitch say 1/8"-1/4" to the inside of the loop (through the seam allowance as my quilt is inside out)?

P.S. love your videos! They are extremely helpful and inspiring!

Thanks for watching. I have a lot of fun with the videos.

I was thinking more of when the quilt is right side out putting a second stitch at the very edge of the fabric.

    That makes sense.

The mailman just dropped off the KAM snap tool (love ebay FAST N FREE!). I'll have to do some playing around after I get back.
