1. Here's an issue - your body weight isn't distributed evenly in the hammock, so the head support probably has a slightly higher force than the foot support. Not only that, but the sine is based on a triangle...and since the weight isn't evenly distributed, the force vectors of the head and foot won't equal the angle between the plumb bob and support.

But it'll be close enough for our purposes.

My guess is, all other things equal, the head end will actually sag more when you're in the hammock, due to your weight distribution and the supports stretching some. If that's the case, the distribution would show up in the angles - you'd just have to measure them at both ends.

3. Good point - and yet another variable to account for...this is why theory rarely matches reality!

4. I talked to the guys at weight test today, they are willing to let me use one of the dyno's for a real test, (all of there dyno's are calibarated) I'll take pictures of the dyno test with a body in the hammock, both ways (head end/feet end) and try to post before the weekend. I'll put a angle indicator or the line so we will know the angle of the dangle.

I'll be using my old HH(non asym) for the test, with lines equal hights(level).

Is there any thing else you can think of for this test?

I am not willing to do the knot test with my HH, but if there is any one out there who is willing or really wants to know, I do work where the test could be done(after normal working hours of course)

1 - tie hammock as you normally would
2 - flop into hammock as you normally would
3 - if you fall on your back, your support is not strong enough
4 - if you dont fall, your good to go

P. S. - BB, 2L water bottles? How about, uhm, lets see....oooh, I know, MagLites!

6. That works to, but then again some of us hang in places you do not want to fall from. Mine are survivable with only wet gear and surface wounds. But hey who wants to fall into the creek in the middle of the night or down the hill.

#3 doesn't work for me. Plus having hard scientific data would be neat. It's always funny how theory and field tests differ.

Thats why I liked music in college. Music theory is derived from practice. So music theory is very pragmatic unlike theory in other fields.

9. My theory is I am waaaaaaaaaaaayyyy out of my league talking science with you guys, but I enjoy listening to your discussions. And BB, Ill take a maglite over a water bottle any day. The possibilities are limitless. If worse came to worse, you could take the end cap off, remove the batteries, and make the maglite a water bottle. Im thinking it would be a great piece of survival gear. Better than having Chuck with you in a survival situation. Yea, thats right Jeff. I said BETTER THAN CHUCK. BD

I'm not a big fan of Chuck as far as martial arts go, but I think I'd rather have him than a maglite in a survival situation. Why? Because if nothing else I could make him carry my gear if I broke a leg or something!
